Importance of Clearing Ourselves After Giving Reiki (applies to all Energy Work)

Close-up Of Mysterious Glowing Power In The Hands

Questions frequently come up from my Reiki Students regarding the practice of clearing ourselves energetically after giving a Reiki session (or other Energy Work) to a client. The simple answer is, clearing ourselves after working on a client is good personal “energetic hygiene.”

Clearing ourselves is highly recommended because, although invisible, energy is a real thing, and I can’t emphasize this enough, it is accumulative. When we work in another’s aura, we take on the energy fragments, or auric debris, given off by the Client during the session.

After giving many sessions, over time, this auric debris weighs us down. We all have enough of our own energetic issues, that we need not take on our Client’s energetic issues, as well.

Question 1: Why do we need to clear ourselves after giving a Reiki session? When we give a Reiki or other energy work session to a client, energetic toxins are released from deep within the cells of their tissues into their aura.

This is the reason that we sweep their aura toward the floor so that the toxins that have been released don’t stay in their aura and go home with them. This would negate the hard energy work that released the energetic toxins in the first place.

We also want to sweep, or use symbols (Reiki 2 and above) on the massage table, as well as crystals used, to clear the client’s energy before working on the next client.

Since our hands are in the aura of the client during the session, it follows that for our own energetic hygiene, it’s encouraged that we clear our own hands as well.

There are many ways to do this, but my personal favorite (which I got from my training with Bioenergy Healer, Mietek Wirkus) is to simply touch both my hands to a wall and intend that any of the other’s energy fragments attached to my hands travel down the wall into the Earth, and be grounded there. I do this before I gently tap the client to signal that the session has concluded.

NOTE: I want to emphasize that we are not talking about actually catching someone’s health issues. We are only talking about having fragments of someone’s energy attached to our own hands. We don’t want to carry our client’s energy with us the rest of the day, or to introduce the previous client’s energy fragments into the next client’s aura.

We all carry around our own energetic issues and don’t need to carry someone else’s with us too. Intention is really what causes the other’s energy to leave us, touching the wall is just acting out our intention to strengthen the effect of our intention.

Question 2: Does it harm the Earth when we place our hands on a wall and intend that any of the another’s energy attached to our hands travel down the wall into the Earth and be grounded there? Many students have also asked if they are harming my home by doing this to my walls.

The answer to both questions is an unequivocal no. Due to our intention, the energy fragments we are clearing will be grounded into the Earth and be recycled.  No worries!

I want to emphasize again, that energy is a real thing, even though it’s invisible to our organ eyes (we can see it with our 3rd Eye). If we are continually taking on the energy of others and not clearing ourselves, their energy will weigh us down overtime. Thus, we should practice good personal energetic hygiene with a clearing ritual after Reiki, or any other Energy Work sessions we give to others.
