Fluorite – Kaleidoscope of the Crystal World

March 1, 2022 By Jeannette Hollenbeck Leave a Comment

Fluorite, also known as Fluorspar, is one of the most color varieated crystals (minerals) on Earth, with Tourmaline being its only serious competitor.

Fluorite is considered the ”Kaleidoscope Crystal,” due to its numerous color varieties, its fluorescence (exhibits an alternate color under UV light) and thermoluminescence (exhibits an alternate color when heated), and that it grows in cubic (square), tetragonal (rectangle), and octahedran (double pyramid) shapes.

Fluorite is the mineral, calcium fluoride (CaF2), and due to its slight water solubility, belongs to the Halide crystal class. Its slight dissolving quality, under water and heat, lends Fluorite to etching, and machine shaping into various objects, e.g., crystal balls, pyramids, pendulums, wands, pendants and beads.

Optically, Fluorite has a vitreous luster, with a transparent to translucent quality, and is found in 100% clear, solid colored, and color banded varieties.

Not all, but many varieties of Fluorite exhibit fluorescence under both ultraviolet light, or high heat (thermoluminescence). In fact, the term fluorescence was coined for this phenomenon, by George Gabriel Stokes, in his published1852 Britsh scientific paper.

Deposits of Fluorite are found in, China, Mexico, South Africa, Russia, Mongolia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Argentina. However, Chinese mines have far surpassed all other producers of Fluorite, in recent years.

Fluorite’s Kaleidoscope of Shapes and Colors

Structurally, Fluorite belongs to the Cubic crystal system, which means it grows in 4 sided geomtetric shapes, in cubes, rectangles, and octahedrons. With a close examination, examples of Fluorite’s varied shapes can be seen in the images included in this section.

Surprisingly, colorwise, pure Fluorite is colorless. However, colored varieties, are far more common, their coloring owed to naturally occurring impurities contained within them. The coloring of each Fluorite specimen is directly related to the specific impurities it contains, which vary from mine to mine.

Besides colorless, Fluorite is found in a wide range of colors; purple, lilac, green, yellow, indigo blue, turquoise blue, pink, and brown. The most coveted of Fluorite color’s has been the scarce indigo blue, affectionately known as, “Blue John,” which is still mined from the “Blue John Cave,” in Derbyshire, England.

Rainbow Fluorite – Fluorite Eye Candy

Rainbow Fluorite gets its name from the colorful banding found in this type of Fluorite. I find this type to to be absolute eye candy.

Gazing on the naturally occurring color combinations, is mesmerizing, much like looking into the prism of a Kaleidoscope. They are beautiful, cheerful, and spark creativity in all things.

Mind-Body-Spirit Affects of Fluorite

Fluorite’s chemical element Fluorine’s name, is derived from the latin word, ”fluere”, which means, “to flow.” It’s no surprise then, that Fluorine enhances the free flow in all aspects of the Mind, Body, and Spirit.

Mental/Emotional Affects

Fluorite helps eliminate fixed ideas and behavior patterns, small thinking, narrow mindedness, and uptightness.

Fluorite promotes mental flexibility, quick thinking, concentration and ability to learn.

Physical Affects

Fluorite promotes firmness of bones and teeth, and improves stiffness and inflammation of joints (arthritis).

Fluorite promotes regeneration of the skin, as well as, the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and lungs.

Fluorite promotes healthy activity of the nervous system and cerebral cortex.

Fluorite helps reduce allergies of psychological origin.

Spiritual Affects

Fluorite clears negative Spiritual energies.

Fluorite promotes the free flow of Spirit

Fluorite clears blockages to Spiritual freedom.

Uses for Fluorite

For their varied color and beauty, Fluorite decorative items enjoy a thriving world-wide retail trade. Fluorite products, such as, crystal balls, pendulums, pyramids, wands, and jewelry are easily found in rock shops, jewelry stores, and all over the internet.

More importantly, Fluorite has a long history of industrial uses, e.g., as flux in smelting processes, in production of fluorescent paints, and glass for microscopes, telescopes, and camera lenses.

Fluorite is also the source of the chemical ingredients of calcium, fluoride, and fluorine contained in medical and dental substances.

To receive the positive affects of Fluorite on the Mind-Body-Spirit, it can be worn as jewelry, or in pockets of clothing. Fluorite can also be laid on the body, or in a grid laid around the body, during a healing session.

Additionally, meditation and dreamwork are beautifully enhanced, with the addition of Fluorite to these activities.

My granddaughter and I, are obsessed with collecting this beautiful Kaleidoscopic crystal. We especially love the Rainbow Fluorite obelisks. I know, if you give Fluorite a try, you will be obsessed too. Happy collecting and healing with Fluorite!
