Sugilite – A Rare Beauty

March 1, 2023 By Jeannette Hollenbeck Leave a Comment

Sugilite, pronounced with either a soft, or a hard “g,” is as stunning as it is rare. This beautiful stone ranges in color from both intense pink to intense purple. Although some Sugilite specimens exhibit a translucent appearance, the majority of specimens on the crystal market appear opaque.

Sugilite is a rare cyclosilicate mineral, with a vitreous luster, and is a member of the Hexagonal crystal system. Sugilite’s Moh’s hardness level of 5.5 to 6.5, lends it to being machine polished and carved into objects of great beauty.

Sugilite was first identified in 1944 Japan by petrologist Ken-Ichi Sugi after it was found on Japan’s Iwagi Islet. Although still considered rare, Sugilite has since been found in mines in Canada, South Africa, Italy, Wales, Australia, and India. But most of the coveted purple colored Sugilite on the market now comes from South Africa.

Sugilite’s beauty, high energy, and rarity have made it both a much sought after and a quite pricey stone to purchase. And due to its popularity, Sugilite has been used to create stunning pieces of jewelry such as pendants, earrings, and rings.

Healing Effects of Sugilite on the Mind-Body-Spirit

Mental/Emotional Effects of Sugilite: Sugilite promotes positive emotional states by providing a protective shield of light against the negative energy and emotions of others. It also aids one in recognizing and avoiding negative situations.

Due to its lithium content the use of Sugilite, like Lepidolite, is believed to be helpful for brain imbalances such as, paranoia, schizophrenia, autism, and Asperger’s syndromes. Additionally, Sugilite helps in controlling compulsions such as addictions to food, drugs, gambling, and alcohol.

Sugilite gives the user a loving and positive outlook and guards against insomnia from tendencies toward anxiety over the continual recounting of troubling life situations, during the night.

Physical Effects of Sugilite: Sugilite assists the immune system to resist illness and has a detoxifying affect on the body. And Sugilite increases the body’s energy and endurance by reducing iron deficiencies.

Sugilite also serves as a pain reliever due to its positive affect on inflammatory syndromes.

Spiritual Effects of Sugilite: Due to its high vibration, purple coloring, and stimulating affect on the 3rd Eye and Crown Chakras, Sugilite is considered to be one of the most spiritual crystals and thus has been widely used for spiritual and psychic development practices (especially clairvoyance and claircognizance), meditation, and dreamwork.

Fortunately, Sugilite protects the user while visiting the Astral Realms during deep meditative and sleep states and while conducting all manner of psychic development practices.

Using Sugilite

Jewelry – Sugilite can be worn in pieces of jewelry set in either silver or gold. It’s especially beautiful when inlayed in southwestern style jewelry pieces.

Meditation – Sugilite can be held during mediation helping one reach the deep mediative states required to connect with the Akashic Records and the Spirit Realm.

Dreamwork – Sugilite can be used to enhance one’s dreamwork when placed under the pillow while sleeping. It helps one both remember and recognize the significance of the symbolism encountered in their dreams.

Decor – Beautiful decorative objects fashioned from Sugilite, such as pyramids, balls, and eggs can be used to enhance the decor of homes as well as spiritual altars.

Summing Up

Sugilite is one of my favorite crystals due to its unparalleled beauty and protective qualities, as well as its ability to open both the 3rd Eye and Crown Chakras. I hope you will consider adding a  Sugilite specimen to your crystal or jewelry collection.
